Historical Background

Leonardo Leo (1694-1744) was born near Brindisi. He is considered one of the leading composers of comic opera in the 18th century and is credited with giving comic opera a musical dignity such as was found in opera seria. He, Leonardo Vinci and Johann Adolph Hasse were the three leading composers of opera seria in Naples.  “Rosina e Lesbo” was first performed in Naples in 1717 and paired with Leo’s “Sesostri re di Egitto.” The librettist is unknown.

Intermezzi

Intermezzi, such as Rosina e Lesbo are short, comic operas that are performed between the acts of the larger opera seria (serious opera)  Typically, each act of the intermezzo is performed during the breaks between the acts of the main opera. These intermezzi usually involve just two main characters—a soprano and a bass—who carry out the comedic action.

The bass is often an older, foolish man who seeks to marry the soprano for her beauty. The bass is generally a buffo character and has a large vocal range and uses patter (fast vocal passages) which show humor. The soprano is generally young and clever and pursues the man for his wealth. These domestic stories offer a delightful contrast to the tragedy of the main opera.

In this aria, Lesbo, is confused because of the beauty and charm of Rosina.
