Historical background
Francesco Conti (1681-1732) was born in Florence. He started his career as the court theorbist at the Habsburg court and later added the duties of court composer. He was a successful composer of oratorios, operas, intermezzi and cantatas. Conti, Pergolesi, Hasse, and Vinci shared a similar operatic style with other composers living in Naples especially in intermezzi compositions. He mastered comedy and parody and showed a special gift for writing buffo arias for the bass voice.
“Erighetta e Don Chilone” premiered in Vienna in 1725 in between the acts of the opera seria (serious opera)“Griselda.” It is also known as L’ammalato immaginario is based on Molière’s famous play Le Malade imaginaire. Pietro Pariati wrote the libretto based on Molière’s famous play Le Malade imaginaire.
The Plot: The story is a classic “clever woman tricks foolish man” comedy:
- Erighetta: A clever, impoverished widow looking for a husband to secure her future.
- Don Chilone: A wealthy, elderly hypochondriac obsessed with his health and constantly taking medicines.
The Scheme: Erighetta disguises herself as a doctor. She visits Don Chilone and convinces him that his current treatments are failing and prescribes a radical new “cure.” The cure is that he must marry a young, healthy woman (her) to restore his own vitality. Don Chilone falls for the trick, and they are married
