Historial Background

Johann Adolph Hasse (1699-1783) was born near Hamburg, and began his music career as a tenor in the Hamburg court. His first opera enjoyed a great success, and that, coupled with the loss of his voice, steered him towards a career as an opera composer. Hasse was the most prolific intermezzo composer based in Naples. He studied in Naples with Alessandro Scarlatti, and while there, set his first opera to a text by Pietro Metastasio, the premier librettist of the time. There developed a long and lasting friendship between the two, and Metastasio became, after a time, the only librettist Hasse used. Together, they came to dominate opera throughout Europe in the first half of the 18th century. Hasse composed at least one opera per year, and by the time of his death at age 84, had written over 80 opere serie, along with 14 intermezzi,

Intermezzi

Intermezzi, such as Larinda e Vanesio, are short, comic operas that are performed between the acts of the larger opera seria (serious opera)  Typically, each act of the intermezzo is performed during the breaks between the acts of the main opera. These intermezzi usually involve just two main characters—a soprano and a bass—who carry out the comedic action.

The bass is often an older, foolish man who seeks to marry the soprano for her beauty. He is generally a buffo character and has a large vocal range and uses patter (fast vocal passages) which show humor. The soprano is generally young and clever who pursues the man for his wealth. These domestic stories offer a delightful contrast to the tragedy of the main opera.
