Giuseppe Maria Orlandini (1676–1760) composed Il marito giocatore, an intermezzo—a short, comic opera traditionally performed between the acts of a serious opera. The plot centers on the humorous domestic battles between Bacocco, a compulsive gambler, and Serpilla, his sharp-tongued, long-suffering wife. Hugely popular in its time, the work became one of the most frequently performed musical dramas of the 18th century, staged widely across Europe. It circulated under several titles, including Serpilla e Bacocco, Il marito giocatore e la moglie becchatona (“The Gambler Husband and the Nagging Wife”), and in English, The Gamester. The intermezzo premiered in Venice in 1719.
The version from which we obtained the manuscript is scored for soprano and bass, although Orlandini scored it for mezzo-soprano and bass in other versions and the aria is printed in its original key. In this aria, Serpilla is expressing her frustration with her husband Bacocco.
