Historical Background

George Frideric Handel (1685–1759) was a German-born composer who later became a naturalized British citizen and one of the great opera composers of the Baroque era. Trained in Germany and Italy, he mastered the Italian operatic style before settling in London. He composed more than forty Italian operas, shaping opera seria through expressive arias, vivid characterization, and strong dramatic pacing, writing music that showcased the virtuosity of star singers and influenced opera audiences across Europe.

This duet, Tutto Contento comes at the end of Act 3 of Tolomeo. Tolomeo’s brother Alessandro, after having attempted to usurp the throne from Tolomeo, gives it back to him and is forgiven. Tolomeo and Seleuce are again reunited and sing this happy duet at the end of the opera.
