Description
Se tu mi guardi is a baritone/bass aria from Mirena e Floro by Leonardo Leo. In this joyful aria, Floro expresses his delight and affection for Mirena.
Historical Background
Francesco Gasparini (1661-1727) was born near Lucca, Italy. Gasparini was one of the leading opera composers in Venice where he was among the first composers to write intermezzi. He is considered one of the most important Italian composers of the early part of the 18th century. His operatic works include 50 opere serie and over 15 comic intermezzi. “Mirena e Floro,” also known as “Nana francese e Armena,” (“The French Maid and Armena”) was composed in 1718 and paired with Antonio Lotti’s opera seria “L’Ascanio.” The librettist is unknown. For an unknown reason, it was decided that Giovanni Bononcini (1670-1747) collaborate with Gasparini in writing the work. Bononcini wrote the 2nd act and Gasparini wrote the 1st and 3rd acts from which the two arias in this collection come.
