Historical Background
George Frideric Handel (1685–1759) was a German-born composer who later became a naturalized British citizen and one of the great opera composers of the Baroque era. Trained in Germany and Italy, he mastered the Italian operatic style before settling in London. He composed more than forty Italian operas, shaping opera seria through expressive arias, vivid characterization, and strong dramatic pacing, writing music that showcased the virtuosity of star singers and influenced opera audiences across Europe.
First performed in London in 1728, Handel’s Tolomeo is set in Cyprus at the end of the first century BC. The rightful heir, Tolomeo, lives in hiding, believing his brother Alessandro seeks the throne and that his wife Seleuce is dead. The roles were originally sung by Senesino (alto castrato) and Francesca Cuzzoni (soprano). In Act II, Tolomeo and Seleuce reunite, then separate again to protect their identities.
