Historical Background
Domenico Sarri (also known as Sarro) (1679–1744) was a Neapolitan composer of the late Baroque period who flourished briefly in the early 18th century. He was among the first prominent composers to emerge from the Naples conservatories, one of the most important musical centers of the time. He focused primarily on writing operas, including both opere serie and intermezzi. Stylistically he writes with clear melodic lines, expressive vocal writing, and a growing emphasis on dramatic clarity. He was especially admired for his skill in writing for the voice, balancing virtuosity with expressive text setting.
Sarri’s greatest strength lies in his intermezzi, where he displayed a natural gift for simple, singable melodies, vivid word painting, and humor. Moschetta e Grullo was written in 1727 and first performed between the acts of Siroe, rè di Persia, while La Furba e lo sciocco premiered in 1731 between the acts of Artemisia. This is one of our favorite operas to perform. Quest’ amore is a charming duet for soprano and bass about their new found love.
