Historical Background
Leonardo Leo (1694-1744) was born near Brindisi. Music historians consider him a leading composer of 18th-century comic opera. They credit him with giving the genre a musical dignity comparable to opera seria. He, along with Leonardo Vinci, and Johann Adolph Hasse were three leading composers of opera seria in Naples. Leo inserted his intermezzo, Elisa e Tullo, between the acts of his opera seria, Zenobio in Palmira, in Naples and it was first performed there in 1725.

Intermezzi
Intermezzi, such as Elisa e Tullo, are short, comic operas that are performed between the acts of the larger opera seria (serious opera). Typically, each act of the intermezzo were performed during the breaks between the acts of the main opera. There are usually two main characters in intermezzi—a soprano and a bass—who carry out the comedic action.
The bass is often an older, foolish man who seeks to marry the soprano for her beauty. He is generally a buffo character and has a large vocal range and uses patter (fast vocal passages) which show humor. The soprano is generally young and clever and pursues the man for his wealth. These domestic stories offer a delightful contrast to the tragedy of the main opera.
