Historical Background
George Frideric Handel (1685–1759) was a German-born composer who later became a naturalized British citizen and one of the great opera composers of the Baroque era. Trained in Germany and Italy, he mastered the Italian operatic style before settling in London. He composed more than forty Italian operas, shaping opera seria through expressive arias, vivid characterization, and strong dramatic pacing, writing music that showcased the virtuosity of star singers and influenced opera audiences across Europe.
First performed in London in 1740, Handel’s Imeneo features Tirinto and Rosmene, originally sung by Giovanni Andreoni (alto castrato) and Elisabeth Duparc (soprano). After Imeneo rescues Rosmene from pirates and is promised her hand, Tirinto is devastated. In Act III, Rosmene chooses Imeneo, and she and Tirinto sing the final duet “Per le porte del tormento” followed by a chorus affirming that reason must prevail over love.
