Historical Background

Johann Adolph Hasse (1699-1783)  was born near Hamburg, and began his music career as a tenor in the Hamburg court. His first opera enjoyed a great success, and that, coupled with the loss of his voice, steered him towards a career as an opera composer. Hasse was the most prolific intermezzo composer based in Naples. He studied in Naples with Alessandro Scarlatti, and while there, set his first opera to a text by Pietro Metastasio, the premier librettist of the time. There developed a long and lasting friendship between the two, and Metastasio became, after a time, the only librettist Hasse used. Together, they came to dominate opera throughout Europe in the first half of the 18th century.

Over the next 20 years Hasse composed at least one opera per year, and by the time of his death at age 84, had written over 80 opere serie, along with 14 intermezzi, of which “Miride e Damari” is the first. It was composed as a companion piece for the opera seria “Il Sesostrate”, premiered in 1726. The libretto was written by Angelo Carasale.  “Mia sposa si vezzosa” is a charming love duet and one of our favorites to sing!
