Historical background
Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) stands as a towering figure of the Classical era. While many know him as the “Father of the Symphony,” he was also a prolific opera composer. During his years at the Esterházy court, Haydn managed a private opera house where he staged over 20 original works. His operas often blended serious drama with clever comedy. He used his signature musical wit and rich orchestration to create sophisticated stories.
One of his most vibrant works from this period is L’incontro improvviso (The Unexpected Encounter), a dramma giocoso that premiered in 1775. Notably, this opera tapped into the 18th-century European fascination with “Turcomania” by featuring an exotic Turkish setting and colorful percussion. Ultimately, while Haydn’s operatic works were eventually overshadowed by those of Mozart, L’incontro improvviso remains a testament to his melodic wit and his ability to blend comedic timing with Italianate lyricism.
