Historical Background

Domenico Sarri (also known as Sarro) (1679–1744) was a Neapolitan composer of the late Baroque period who flourished briefly in the early 18th century. He was among the first prominent composers to emerge from the Naples conservatories, one of the most important musical centers of the time.   He focused primarily on writing operas, including both opere serie and intermezzi. Stylistically he writes with clear melodic lines, expressive vocal writing, and a growing emphasis on dramatic clarity. He was especially admired for his skill in writing for the voice, balancing virtuosity with expressive text setting.

Sarri’s greatest strength lies in his intermezzi, where he displayed a natural gift for simple, singable melodies, vivid word painting, and humor. La Furba e lo sciocco premiered in 1731 between the acts of Artemisia.  “Mi Rimbonda” 1 is a vibrant Baroque selection.

This is one of our favorite intermezzi to perform.

Intermezzi

Intermezzi, such as La Furba e lo sciocco, are short, comic operas that are performed between the acts of the larger opera seria (serious opera)  Typically, each act of the intermezzo is performed during the breaks between the acts of the main opera. These intermezzi usually involve just two main characters—a soprano and a bass—who carry out the comedic action.

The bass is often an older, foolish man who seeks to marry the soprano for her beauty. He is generally a buffo character and has a large vocal range and uses patter (fast vocal passages)  which show humor as illustrated in this aria, Mi rimbomba. The soprano is generally clever and pursues the man for his wealth. These domestic stories offer a delightful contrast to the tragedy of the main opera.
