Antonio Caldara (1670–1736) ranks among the most prolific composers of his day. He was born in Venice and then traveled widely, serving as maestro di cappella in Mantua, Rome, and, most importantly, Vienna. There, he met the needs of the court by writing a large quantity of operas for feast days and the annual carnival. He wrote far fewer intermezzi. When an exceptional libretto inspired him, he demonstrated great imagination in instrumental scoring and character delineation. His intermezzo Lisetta e Astrobolo dates from 1717 and was paired with the opera seria La verità nell’inganno.
