Historical Background
Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710-1736) was born near Naples. He was one of the most important composers of Italian comic opera in the century, though he had limited success during his life. His fame grew tremendously after his death with performances of his music throughout Europe. One of these traveling troupes of musicians performed his intermezzi throughout Europe and reached Paris in 1752.
His intermezzo La serva padrona was among the works that sparked the “War of the Buffoons” Due to his posthumous fame, many works were attributed to him incorrectly. Of the 148 originally attributed to him in the Complete Works, only 30 are considered to be genuine. “La serva padrona” (“The Maid as Mistress”), also known as Serpina e Uberto, premiered in Naples in 1733 alongside Pergolesi’s Il prigionier superbo. Gennaro Antonio Federico wrote the libretto.
In this sparkling exchange, the clever maidservant Serpina teasingly asserts her dominance over her exasperated master Uberto, reading his true feelings in his own eyes even as he tries to resist her bold advances.
