Historical Background
Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710-1736) was born near Naples. He was one of the most important composers of Italian comic opera in the century, though he had limited success during his life. His fame grew tremendously after his death with performances of his music throughout Europe. One of these traveling troupes of musicians performed his intermezzi throughout Europe and reached Paris in 1752.
His intermezzo La serva padrona was among the works that sparked the “War of the Buffoons” Due to his posthumous fame, many works were attributed to him incorrectly. Of the 148 works originally attributed to Pergolesi in the Complete Works, scholars now consider only 30 to be genuine. La serva padrona (“The Maid as Mistress”), also known as Serpina e Uberto, features a libretto by Gennaro Antonio Federico and premiered in Naples in 1733 with Pergolesi’s Il prigionier superbo.
Intermezzi
