Domenico Cimarosa and Il Matrimonio Segreto

Domenico Cimarosa (1849-1901) was a leading figure in 18th-century Italian music. His most famous work, Il matrimonio segreto (The Secret Marriage), remains a landmark of opera buffa. It premiered in Vienna in 1792 to historic success. Emperor Leopold II enjoyed it so much that he ordered a full encore of the entire opera. The story follows Paolino and Carolina, a young couple who marry in secret to avoid her father’s social ambitions. Cimarosa’s score combines elegant melodies with the high-energy “patter” style later perfected by Rossini.

The Trio: “Le faccio un inchino”

The Act I trio, “Le faccio un inchino” (I make a bow to you), is a standout moment of musical comedy. It features three women—Carolina, her sister Elisetta, and their aunt Fidalma—engaged in a “cat-fight” disguised as polite conversation. They trade biting insults through exaggerated curtsies and mock formal greetings. Cimarosa uses a bright Andante grazioso tempo to create a sharp contrast between the refined music and the characters’ petty rivalry. The vocal lines intertwine with increasing speed, showcasing brilliant comic timing and vocal agility.  Its charm is so enduring that even Tchaikovsky later arranged the piece for orchestra, captivated by its sharp characterization and impeccable comic timing. This is a fabulous trio to sing and to stage; perfect for a recital or any performance!
