Historical Background
George Frideric Handel (1685–1759) was a German-born composer who later became a British citizen. He reigned as a master of the Baroque era, shaping opera seria with his expressive arias and vivid characterization. After training in Germany and Italy, Handel settled in London and composed more than forty Italian operas. His dramatic pacing and virtuosic writing influenced audiences across Europe and showcased the talents of the world’s finest singers.
“Io t’abbraccio” from Rodelinda
“Io t’abbraccio” is a heart-wrenching farewell duet from Handel’s opera, Rodelinda. The piece concludes the second act with a moment of profound sorrow. Originally performed in London in 1725, the debut featured the famous alto castrato Senesino and the soprano Francesca Cuzzoni.
The story follows Bertarido, a defeated king forced to flee his country. Just as he reunites with his wife, Rodelinda, his mortal enemy captures him. The enemy orders his immediate imprisonment and execution. This duet captures the couple’s grief as they face a forced separation. Although they reunite in the third act, this scene remains one of the most powerful depictions of heartbreak in Baroque music.
