Bass aria Guance morbide       Range of aria

Historical Background

Nicola Porpora (1686-1768) was known throughout Europe in his lifetime not only as a composer, but also as one of the greatest of all singing teachers. . At the time this was written, Porpora enjoyed tremendous success both with the court at Naples and with the Viennese court, and he traveled frequently back and forth between two cities. He was also the chief singing teacher at the Neapolitan Conservatorio di San Onofrio. Two of the greatest castrati of the era were pupils of his there: Farinelli and Caffarelli. He also taught Hasse for a time, and much later in life gave some lessons to a young Josef Haydn.

His intermezzo “Eurilla e Beltramme” was first presented in Naples in 1722 and was a setting of a libretto by Silvio Stampiglia. It was inserted between the acts of Domenico Sarri’s “Partenope.”

Intermezzi

Intermezzi, such as Eurilla e Beltramme are short, comic operas that are performed between the acts of the larger opera seria (serious opera)  Typically, each act of the intermezzo is performed during the breaks between the acts of the main opera. These intermezzi usually involve just two main characters—a soprano and a bass—who carry out the comedic action.

The bass is often an older, foolish man who seeks to marry the soprano for her beauty. He is generally a buffo character and has a large vocal range and uses patter (fast vocal passages) which show humor The soprano is generally young and clever and pursues the man for his wealth. These domestic stories offer a delightful contrast to the tragedy of the main opera.
