Historical Background
Johann Adolph Hasse was born near Hamburg, and began his music career as a tenor in the Hamburg court. His first opera was a great success, and the loss of his voice, combined with that success, steered him toward a career as an opera composer.. Hasse was the most prolific intermezzo composer based in Naples. He studied in Naples with Alessandro Scarlatti, and while there, set his first opera to a text by Pietro Metastasio, the premier librettist of the time. They developed a long and lasting friendship and Metastasio became, after a time, the only librettist Hasse used. Together, they came to dominate opera throughout Europe in the first half of the 18th century.
Over the next 20 years Hasse composed at least one opera per year, and by the time of his death at age 84, had written over 80 opere serie, along with 14 intermezzi. One of his intermezzi, “Larinda e Vanesio” was also known as “L’artigiano gentiluomo” (“The Gentleman Craftsman”). The libretto was written by Antonio Salvi or Angelo Carasale and was based on Molière. It was first performed in Naples in 1726 and paired with Hasse’s “L’astarto.” The duet Che contento, che diletto MP3 piano accompaniment is a helpful resource to learn this a delightful duet about love.
